Chapter Twenty-One

LAUREN

I read about something we can use to make me armor,” I say, and I jog to catch up with Chase as he strides down the beach. “There’s some kind of 3D printer-like-thing around here. Do you have any idea what I’m talking about? Can you teach me to shoot a bow? I don’t know, is that really the best option? And I don’t fully understand the Snixes thing—is that like a dark power? Good thing you turn the light on, haha, get it?” I swat Chase’s shoulder with the back of my hand and he glances at my hand and then at me with a raised eyebrow.

I should’ve stopped and slept last night.

Chase freezes. “Here.” He draws a line in the sand with his foot and sits on the line. His hands rest palm-up on his knees, and I think he looks like a really skinny Buddha. When I don’t move, he squints up at me. I fold up my body and sit a few feet away from him.

“I thought you were going to train me,” I mutter.

Chase closes his eyes and faces the water. A little smirk twitches on his lips. Now I’m annoyed, and I huff a quick breath out of my nose to make sure he knows. I’m not in the mood for silent games. I need to get things done. My mom and Emblem are captive somewhere, I think, with the Snixes, and I found a way to help them that lets us all live. I don’t have time for training. When I have light, I can find my mom and Emblem. I’ll be able to “feel” them. At least, that’s how Ariel explained it in her journal. The concept of glowing humans works a lot like Jedi’s and the force. But then again, what do I know.

I pinch my eyes shut a little harder. The sun warms my skin and I want to fall over onto my side and sleep. Tears burn behind my eyelids. This whole thing was a bad idea, and it isn’t going to work, and I still have that too-sharp stabbing dagger in my boot. I should get rid of it.

My mind decides just now to wander back to this morning when I asked Chase to train me. I wasn’t completely honest with him. I don’t really want to be a Guardian. In fact, it kind of scares me. And I don’t really want to stay in Agalrae forever and be Chase’s partner in whatever it is we’re supposed to be doing. I haven’t found the Promise prophecy yet. My stomach churns and calls me a liar again and again and again.

I should just tell Chase the Snix hired me to kill him and then go home.

Sometimes I wish quitting was in my nature.

There’s a stirring in the sand next to me and I peek out of the corner of my eye because I don’t know if I’m supposed to be looking. Chase stands beside me and his hands swirl in small circles first, then larger, and small again while he steps back and forth.
